Ouchi-juku

Ouchi-juku is a post station developed in about 1640 on the Aizu-Nishi Kaido trade route that ties together Aizuwakamatsu and Nikko-Imaichi. It prospered as an important freight and transportation hub when the lord of Tsuruga-jo Castle visited Edo (Tokyo). Today, groups of thatched houses that reflect the landscape of the Edo era remain, and the area has been designated as an Important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings. Visitors can enjoy specialty gourmet dishes such as negi soba (buckwheat noodles topped with spring onions) and iwana (trout) sandwiches.
