Motsu-ji Temple was founded by the monk Jikaku Daishi, in 850. At the end of the Heian period, the second and third Oshu Fujiwara lords, Motohira and Hidehira, built grand temple buildings including the Kondo Enryuji Temple and the Kashoji Temple. In total, the complex included 40 temple buildings and 500 monks' quarters, earning it the reputation as a sacred ground without peer in Japan.
