Cherry Blossoms in Hiyoriyama Park
©AFLO
The sun sinking down into the Sea of Japan as seen from Hiyoriyama Park stirs travelers' sentiments. The park is also famous spot for cherry blossoms. In mid-April every year, the Sakata Hiyoriyama Cherry Blossom Festival is held, when almost 400 cherry trees, including Yoshino cherry trees, bloom and are lit up with paper lanterns at night.
Located inside the park are one of Japan's oldest wooden hexagonal lighthouses, a compass stone, as well as a "sengoku bune" wooden junk boat used in the old days, which give the park the atmosphere of an old port town.
